Happy Sunday! I hope you had a wonderful weekend, despite the outcome of yesterday's game.  The weather was definitely beautiful. Friday's extra credit question responses have been recorded.  As mentioned, the student with the closest score would get a prize. I calculated the closest score by: Score = absolute value[predicted score for MD - actual score for MD] + absolute value[predicted score for MI - actual score for MI] The winning score was submitted by the four person team of RJ, CC, HC, and MA.  I'll bring your prize on Monday. On Monday, we'll finish the rapid mix example and if time allows, we'll do a homework problem (from the mass balance reactor theory homework).  On Tuesday, we will do a problem on flocculation. The worksheet will be available on LON-CAPA. On Wednesday we'll start the unit on lime softening.  This week the homework on mass balance and reactor theory is due on Friday at 11:59 PM. I have also opened the participation question, which is...

Happy Sunday! I hope all of you were able to relax and rest this weekend. I was able to get in several good walks and to go apple picking as the weather was perfect. If you're interested in apple picking and want to go some place close to campus, I'd suggest Clearview Orchard at 1051 Barry Rd, Haslett, MI. They also have pumpkins, gourds, and raw honey.  Of course, there are Uncle John's and Country Mill, but they're farther away (and a lot more commercial). Clearview Orchard, Haslett   On Monday we will continue (and hopefully, finish) the unit on mass balance and reactor theory. On Tuesday, we'll start the unit on coagulation/flocculation.  I've posted a new schedule on LON-CAPA. I also posted Mini-Design 1 (due October 20) so as to give you more context for the RFQ assignment.  Due dates: FRQ assignment: Sept. 22, 2023 Mass balance and reactor theory, coagulation/flocculation: Sept. 29, 2023 If you need the grace periods, just send me an email.  This we...

Greetings and happy Sunday from New Jersey! I hope you all had a good weekend! As I mentioned to you last week, I had to attend the Board of Directors meeting of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors in Philadelphia from Wednesday through Friday.  On Friday, I took the train to visit my mom in northern New Jersey.  I was scheduled to fly back to Michigan this morning; however, due to the storms on the East Coast, my flight was canceled. The first flight I could get back is on Monday afternoon.  I apologize for canceling class on Monday, but I hope that when you are my age, you're able to visit your mothers (mine is 87 years old).   I'll give Monday's lecture on Tuesday during tutorial. We'll still have the opportunity to do some group processing of mass balance/reactor theory problems during tutorial.  Here is the lecture schedule for this week: Monday: No class - use the time to work on homework. No office hours. Tuesday: Fini...

Happy Labor Day! I hope you are enjoying the long weekend and the last few days of summer!  It's definitely been a beautiful weekend.  Interurban Pathway, Meridian Township This week in ENE 483, we will prepare health and safety plans during tutorial on Tuesday.  You will complete these in your assigned teams, which have been posted to LON-CAPA. If there are issues with the assignments, please let me know as soon as possible. Only one team member needs to upload your HASP to the dropbox on LON-CAPA. The HASP is due on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 11:59 PM. On Wednesday, we will look at design considerations for water and wastewater treatment plants. The lecture notes are posted.  On Friday, we will not have class as I need to be at the board meeting for the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors in Philadelphia. I have posted a pre-recorded lecture along with the notes. I opened up Homework 1 on the history of water and wastewater treatment, design...
