Week 2: Sept 10, 2023

Greetings and happy Sunday from New Jersey!

I hope you all had a good weekend!

As I mentioned to you last week, I had to attend the Board of Directors meeting of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors in Philadelphia from Wednesday through Friday.  On Friday, I took the train to visit my mom in northern New Jersey.  I was scheduled to fly back to Michigan this morning; however, due to the storms on the East Coast, my flight was canceled. The first flight I could get back is on Monday afternoon. 


I apologize for canceling class on Monday, but I hope that when you are my age, you're able to visit your mothers (mine is 87 years old).   I'll give Monday's lecture on Tuesday during tutorial. We'll still have the opportunity to do some group processing of mass balance/reactor theory problems during tutorial. 

Here is the lecture schedule for this week:

  • Monday: No class - use the time to work on homework. No office hours.
  • Tuesday: Finish discussion of water supply design considerations. Mass balance/reactor theory
  • Wednesday: Mass balance/reactor theory
  • Friday: Coagulation/flocculation (there will be in-class lecture)
I will open the online participation question today and it is due Friday, Sept 15, 11:59 PM.

Homework 1 is also due Friday, Sept 15, 11:59 PM. 

If you need the grace periods for either, just let me know.

The RFQ assignment is due Sept 22, 11:59 PM.  You will have time during tutorial next week to work on it. 

The first Environmental Engineering Student Society meeting is Monday at 6 PM in 2400 EB: Student Panel and Game Night.  Come join us to meet the panel, we will be giving career fair advice. We’ll also play some games; winners will be rewarded with a tshirt! This is a great opportunity to meet peers with a shared interest in the environment! 



Again, I apologize for canceling class and office hours and look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

Happy Sunday, I hope you had a good weekend. This week we will meet on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for lecture and tutorial.  I will not present any new material during this time. You will have this time to work on MiniDesign3 and/or the tutorial assignment.  There will be no class on Friday because of Design Day. Grades for all the homework assignments are posted on LON-CAPA. I have also opened up the solutions to help you with MD3.  The assignments that are outstanding are: Tutorial 3: Water Treatment Plant Demonstration Due Dec. 8 (Absolute deadline Dec. 10th, no extensions beyond the 10th) Tutorial 4: Premise Plumbing Due Dec. 8th/ grace period to the 10th.  (This is to be done individually. Welcome to ENE 483

Sumner, New Zealand August 23, 2023 Greetings and welcome to ENE 483, I hope all of you are well and enjoying the last days of your summer.   I look forward to seeing you on Monday (9:10-10 AM in NR 221) for lecture.  Please note: lecture will NOT be online and in-person attendance is required. If you miss lecture, please plan to obtain the notes from a classmate. Tutorial sessions will start on Tuesday, September 5th. Please note: tutorial attendance is required.  If you are ill and cannot make it to the tutorial, please let me know so we can schedule a make-up. Week 6: 10/8/2023

Greetings, Teams 11-20 will visit the East Lansing/Meridian Township Water Treatment Plant this week. The plant is located off Burcham Road, just east of Park Lake Road as shown on the map below. October 10 : Teams 11-15 will attend from 10:15-11:15 AM Teams 16-20 will attend from 11:15 AM -12:15 PM. Teams 1-10: please use the time to work on the Tutorial Assignment 1(scavenger hunt or MiniDesign 1) I know this is a bit outside of our regular tutorial time, but I wanted to make sure that all students were able to spend an hour at the plant. Please plan to carpool with your team as parking is limited and please arrive approximately 5 minutes early so that each of the groups will have an hour to see the plant.  You should plan to enter the plant just off Burcham Road. There is a gate with a call box.
