Week 10: November 5, 2023

Greetings,

We will continue our visits the East Lansing Water Resource Recovery Facility this week.

The plant is located off Trowbridge Rd, as shown on the map below.

November 7:

  • Teams 11-15 will attend from 10:15-11:15 AM
  • Teams 16-19 will attend from 11:15 AM -12:15 PM.

I know this is a bit outside of our regular tutorial time, but I wanted to make sure that all students were able to spend an hour at the plant. Please make sure to bring the tutorial handout so that you gather the information needed to complete the assignment.

Please plan to carpool with your team as parking is limited and please arrive approximately 5 minutes early so that each of the groups will have an hour to see the plant. Please check the weather as you will be outside most of the time. Dress appropriately! (Forecast: partly cloudy, 45 degrees).

In the off-week, teams should plan to work on the tutorial assignment on field trips and/or MiniDesign2. I will post the guidelines for MiniDesign2 early this week.

DO NOT GO ON THE ENTRANCE RAMP TO THE HIGHWAY!   After you go under the highway, watch for a left hand turn (it is a bit difficult to see and it looks a bit like you're turning into a driveway).  The address is 1700 Trowbridge Rd. East Lansing.

Here is the schedule of due dates for the remainder of the semester:

  • Nov. 3: Granular Media filtration homework
  • Nov. 10: Disinfection homework (homework open)
  • Nov. 17: Field trip reports (tutorial assignment 2)
  • Nov. 22: Sorption processes homework & MiniDesign 2
  • Dec. 1: Tutorial Assignment 3: Make a water treatment plant (handout posted)
  • Dec. 8: Tutorial Assignment 4: Distribution systems/ premise plumbing
  • Dec. 15: MiniDesign 3

Dr. Joel Lanning has been working on the walk-through solutions in the Davis textbook. He is asking if you would provide your feedback to him.  The survey is located here:

Note: this effort is independent of ENE 483 and no class credit will be given for participation. I will not know whether you participate or not.

See you in class tomorrow!

P.S. And some photos from Saturday's walk.  We were going to walk at Hawk Island Park but decided to check out this trail, one that my husband had never walked on. You can pick it up at the intersection of Dunckel and Jolly Roads but we started on Development Drive. The trail goes under I96 and south to Holt.

Thanksgiving dinner?

Just why?
