Week 9: 10/29/2023

Greetings,

Over the next two weeks, we will visit the East Lansing Water Resource Recovery Facility. On Monday, I will provide an overview of the facility, so that you get more from the visit.

The plant is located off Trowbridge Rd, as shown on the map below.

October 31:

  • Teams 1-5 will attend from 10:15-11:15 AM
  • Teams 6-10 will attend from 11:15 AM -12:15 PM.

November 7:

  • Teams 11-15 will attend from 10:15-11:15 AM
  • Teams 16-20 will attend from 11:15 AM -12:15 PM.

I know this is a bit outside of our regular tutorial time, but I wanted to make sure that all students were able to spend an hour at the plant. Please make sure to bring the tutorial handout so that you gather the information needed to complete the assignment.

Please plan to carpool with your team as parking is limited and please arrive approximately 5 minutes early so that each of the groups will have an hour to see the plant. Please check the weather as you will be outside most of the time. Dress appropriately!

In the off-week, teams should plan to work on the tutorial assignment on field trips and/or MiniDesign2. I will post the guidelines for MiniDesign2 early this week.

DO NOT GO ON THE ENTRANCE RAMP TO THE HIGHWAY!   After you go under the highway, watch for a left hand turn (it is a bit difficult to see and it looks a bit like you're turning into a driveway).  The address is 1700 Trowbridge Rd. East Lansing.

Here is the schedule of due dates for the remainder of the semester:

  • Nov. 3: Granular Media filtration homework
  • Nov. 10: Disinfection homework
  • Nov. 17: Field trip reports (tutorial assignment 2)
  • Nov. 22: Sorption processes homework & MiniDesign 2
  • Dec. 1: Tutorial Assignment 3: Make a water treatment plant
  • Dec. 8: Tutorial Assignment 4: Distribution systems/ premise plumbing
  • Dec. 15: MiniDesign 3

Dr. Joel Lanning has been working on the walk-through solutions in the Davis textbook. He is asking if you would provide your feedback to him.  The survey is located here:

Note: this effort is independent of ENE 483 and no class credit will be given for participation. I will not know whether you participate or not.

See you in class tomorrow!
