Welcome to ENE 483

Sumner, New Zealand

August 23, 2023

Greetings and welcome to ENE 483,

I hope all of you are well and enjoying the last days of your summer.   I look forward to seeing you on Monday (9:10-10 AM in NR 221) for lecture.  Please note: lecture will NOT be online and in-person attendance is required. If you miss lecture, please plan to obtain the notes from a classmate.

Tutorial sessions will start on Tuesday, September 5th. Please note: tutorial attendance is required.  If you are ill and cannot make it to the tutorial, please let me know so we can schedule a make-up.

The syllabus and other relevant material have been posted on the LON-CAPA site: https://loncapa.msu.edu/.  I will not be using D2L.

This survey will help me form lab teams.  Please complete it as soon as possible, but before August 28th at 5 PM.

Throughout the semester I will post my weekly email messages on the blog: https://ene483fall2023.blogspot.com, so if you've missed them, can't find them in the plethora of emails received, accidentally deleted it - you can always go to the blog. I will also post internships, coops, scholarship opportunities there.

There will be no lecture on Monday, Sept. 4 as it is Labor Day.  We will meet in EB 2400 on Tuesday, Sept. 5 for tutorial.

And finally, sadly, COVID is not over, case numbers are increasing, and infection can raise the risk of diabetes, heart disease or Alzheimer’s that’s independent of long COVID. And those of you who have taken ENE 489 with me know that SARS-COV2 is airborne and can remain in the room air for hours.

Curtailing the spread of COVID-19 has become one's personal responsibility. The ASCE Code of Ethics states that the safety, health, and well-being of the public are paramount. As such, I will be wearing a N95 mask in class. We'll talk more about risk mitigation and ethics, but hopefully, as members of the engineering profession and the MSU community, you take the the ASCE Code of Ethics seriously.

I look forward to seeing you in class on Monday.

All the best,

Dr. Masten
